Difficulty in water drainage due to the hardness of the underground soil is a clear sign that the soil has become hard due to which the roots of the plant are rotting and unable to grow. Such a situation occurs when the soil is not compacted. By mulching the soil, the oxygen goes inside the soil and the upper surface soil also dries out, which will neither make the soil hard nor smooth. As the soil dries out due to exposure to sunlight, the soil particles separate, causing the soil to become soft. A few days after mulching the soil, the soil will be dry.

  • Raised Beds Planting for Vegetables: A bed made above ground level is called a raised bed. This keeps the water drainage system in good condition and the vegetables also flourish well. Because the soil of the raised bed is soft and the roots of the plant are also protected.
  • Use Organic Matter to Keep the Soil Soft: Aged dung compost, dried leaves, and kitchen waste play an important role in keeping the soil soft. These organic matters take time to dissolve in the soil and are the plant food.
  • Allow Air to Pass Through the Soil: After digging the soil, air circulates in the ground and this is necessary for the roots of the plants. This process is very useful for soil drainage as the water passes through the soil layers and is easily filtered.

Importance of Organic Matters

Organic matter is very beneficial for our soil as it helps to increase the biological activity and as you use organic matter, the microbial activity will increase and this is an important requirement of the soil. Indicates that the soil is fertile.

  • Add Compost or Aged Manure: Manure, plant leaves, food scraps, and various organic matter when added to the soil, naturally decomposes through chemical processes in the soil. After some time it turns into soil. Microbial and micro-organisms in the soil take part in this process. It also acts as an excellent fertilizer.
  • Mulch Around Plants: A layer of material placed on top of the soil and around the plants that are formed to retain the herb and moisture and serves to protect the plants from hot winds and direct sunlight and also contain nutrients. Mealworms and various insects carry them into the soil, which helps the plant to develop better.

Solution of Nutrient Deficiencies

Due to the lack of nutrition in the soil, the plants start changing the color of their leaves and even cannot lift their own weight. This is all due to the lack of nutrients. Fertilizers are of many types which are known according to their potency. Before using a balanced fertilizer, do a soil test and know the individual plant needs of how much and what type of fertilizer that plant needs.
  • Soil Quality Test: Before planting, test the soil to determine what type of fertilizer will be used according to your chosen plants. Various instruments have also been introduced to check soil quality.

Imbalance of Soil pH

If your plants are attacked by verticillium and fusarium or any of the other diseases or if the leaves of the plant start to turn yellow, then understand that the soil pH is low. Each plant needs specific nutrients and when the pH level is out of range, many diseases develop. It will help to maintain the health of your garden but also help you when the conditions are bad. Be smart about managing your soil’s pH level and make timely decisions.

  • For Alkaline Soil (pH too high): The use of organic matter will acidify the soil. Ammonium sulfate can help lower soil pH. Many plants can tolerate a pH between seven and eight. Plants grow best in slightly alkaline soil.
  • For Acidic Soil (pH too low): Many growers and farmers face the problem of low soil pH depending on the location, some soils are naturally acidic. If the soil pH is less than 5.5, yield reduction and crop damage may occur. An increase in micronutrients such as manganese, aluminum, and iron can cause toxicity problems. If the availability of nutrients such as Ca and Mg in the soil is low then deficiency may occur.
